Look no further, we’re hitting you with all the essentials and a who’s who on the budding talent appearing live next week. Check out Mass Appeal’s guide to acts we’re excited to see rock the stage at this year’s CMJ Music Marathon. From pioneers of spoken word, to future R&B superstars and everything in between, Mass Appeal’s got all your needs covered.
The Hype: The three man group consisting of MCs Wiki and Hak, along with producer Sporting Life broke onto the scene with their viral hit “Wikispeaks” just last year. Touted for gritty New York flows over obscure beats, Ratking subsequently inked a deal with XL Recordings’ Hot Charity imprint in 2012, leading to the re-release of their Wiki93 EP. The project bubbled amongst hip hop heads, who patiently waited to see what direction the crew would take their movement.
Check Them Out Because: It’s been nearly a year since Ratking signed to XL and they have yet to release their debut album. This sets the stage (no pun intended) for some intriguing performances at CMJ, with the high possibility that the New York collective will be unleashing some new tracks.
“Hennessy’s the only thing that’s friendly to me/I’m straight New York, what a lot of y’all pretending to be” (Wiki on “Wikispeaks”)
“Grabbing my razor shaving stabbin’ would be my way if I hadn’t been a bitch/What is this the dumbest mick-spic mix covered in sick with the slightest touch of a bitch?” (Wiki on “Piece of Shit”)
