Spit Gold Under An Empire: New Doc Looks At the New NY Rap Scene

The hip-hop scene in New York City is as vibrant and diverse as its ever been.Taking note of this Montreal-based director Emily Kai Bock came to the Big Apple to document the scene following up-and-comers Angel Haze; Kirk Knight and CJ Fly of Pro Era; The Underachievers and transgendered performance artist Mykki Blanco for the film “Spit Gold Under An Empire”.  The film part of The Sundance Channel’s New American Noise series which spotlights music scenes like shoegaze in Portland and bounce music in New Orleans. Bock, who you may know as the director of Grimes’ “Oblivion” clip, did this special abbreviated cut of the film for Nowness you can see the full version as well as other films on the New American Noise site starting Jan. 19.

    It’d be flyer if Ms. Kai Bock took more time and traversed more of the National/International underground ‘ newness’ as well …..a Mississippi dude like Tito Lopez could really benefit from this kind of creative scope and coverage; deservedly so. My 2 cents.
