Imagine this headline: “Beyoncé Not Letting Jay Z Work With Anymore Women.” Sounds crazy right? The idea that Beyoncé could have the power to tell Jay who he can and can not work with sounds preposterous.
But what if you reverse the roles? Would you still be as shocked if a husband or boyfriend put a proverbial leash on their wives or girlfriends career?
I hope so, because we were shocked when we peeped Shakira’s recent interview with Billboard. In it, she let the world know that her boyfriend/ baby’s daddy, Spanish soccer player Gerard Piqué, has banned her from doing music videos with men. When discussing her recent steamy video with Rihanna, the pop star said of her beau:
“He’s very territorial, and since he no longer lets me do videos with men, well, I have to do them with women,” she says with a laugh. “It’s more than implied in our relationship that I can’t do videos like I used to. It’s out of the question – which I like, by the way. I like that he protects his turf and he values me, in a way that the only person that he would ever let graze my thigh would be Rihanna.”
I don’t know what’s more disheartening, the fact that it’s 2014 and Shakira’s boyfriend is Ike Turner-ing her career, or the fact that she claims to like it, while objectifying herself as “turf” you know the stuff that Piqué spends his career running all over. Coincidence? I think not.
