We’re extremely sad to report that skateboarding pioneer and original Dogtown “Z-Boy” Jay Adams has passed at the age of 53. Stacy Peralta, also a former Z-Boy and founder of Powell-Peralta, announced that Adams suffered a massive heart attack.
Jay Adams was in trouble with the law more often than not, spending a large amount of time in prison between the early ’80s and mid-2000s, but had been drug free since 2005. Since then, Adams had been working on revamping EZ Ryderz Originalz with Jef Hatsel.
Adams is considered a legend for bringing surf-influence to freestyle skating, which up to that point had been lacking innovation and a real identity. He was also a pioneer of pool skating. In short, you can thank him for making skateboarding what it is today. And for that we say, Rest In Peace.
