OFF! – “Wasted Years”
Hardcore punk isn't dead. It's actually about to kick you in the teeth.
If you don’t know who hardcore punk supergroup OFF! is by now, you’re late to the party and it’s essential at least to make some kind of effort to attend. The group is compiled of musicians from some of the best punk bands of all time– vocalist Keith Morris of Black Flag/Circle Jerks started the group with Dimitri Coats of Burning Bridges in 2009, enlisting Steven Shane McDonald of Red Kross on bass, and Mario Rubalcaba of Rocket From The Crypt on drums. Since 2010 when they released First Four EPs (a collection their first four EPs), the group’s been staying true to hardcore punk roots, with amazing screaming vocals, a slew of brief songs (their longest song to-date is on this record, clocking in at 2:15), and badass album art from the legendary Raymond Pettibon.
Last week marked the release of the group’s third studio album, Wasted Years. The record stands at 23 minutes long and features Morris’ bleeding vocals over somewhat experimental guitar-work (for a hardcore band), and it’s so goddamn fun. The record has catchy guitars, addictive drumming, and vocals that hit so hard, you can’t help but crack a smile.
It’s 2014. Hardcore punk isn’t dead. It’s actually about to kick you in the teeth.
