Nike Mag’s Sell For $100k, We’ve Reached Peak Sneaker Ridiculousness

Rich people

There aren’t many Nike Mags out in the wild. The sneaker company has produced only 92 pairs of the IRL, wearable, self-lacing shoes from Back to the Future II. There are 89 pairs which are being raffled off to the public. Anyone can enter that contest here. But rich people don’t like leaving things to chance. For the truly dedicated sneaker aficionado, Nike is auctioning off three pairs. Each auction has one pair and is taking place in a different city—London, New York and Hong Kong.

The auction in China wrapped up today and the hammer price came in at $104,267. Yup, that’s a fuck-load of money for some shoes.

Nike is donating all proceeds from Nike Mags to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, so hey, you can’t really get mad at a rich person blowing so much cash on sneakers because it’s more like they just donated a bunch of money to charity.

What you can get mad at is the fact that the rich person who now owns these things will probably just write it off of their taxes and put the shoes in a glass case where they will continually rise in value. Being rich is great.

Today is the last day that poor people can enter the raffle for a chance to win. At ten dollars it’s not a bad deal and it’s for a good cause. You probably won’t get much out of writing it off.

Watch a rich guy play with the shoes in the video below.
