Yesterday, May 1st 2013, marked the beginning of The New Museum’s Ideas City Festival. Well into its third year of operation the unique weekend gathering brings together arts, education, and community organizations for a series of panels, projects, showcases and one big conference about the future of cities as urban centers for creativity and growth. This year’s theme is “Untapped Capital” and as a special introduction and tribute to it The New Museum hired renowned creative director, designer, illustrator Kevin Lyons to create a custom window display.
We caught up with Mr. Lyons midway through the hand-drawn work. He told Mass Appeal it was “pretty cool, anytime you can make your mark on an institution,” indicating his passion for the sketches that he was then transferring onto the New Museum facade using Krink markers.
The 2013 Ideas City Festival kicks off today and spans until this Saturday, May 4th. Some of the featured events include the After Hours: Murals On Bowery project available for viewing any of the festival days after 6PM and Bobbito Garcia and Kevin Couliau’s Doin’ It In The Park: Pick-Up Basketball NYC happening Saturday evening 8PM-10PM.
