Looking for the perfect beat

New Mini-Doc Profiles Afrika Bambaataa’s “Looking For The Perfect Beat”

Well, here's a perfect beat for y'all!

As part of their beat:repeat series, Red Bull Music Academy profiles the Afrika Bambaataa classic “Looking For The Perfect Beat,” exploring the way “Planet Rock” producers Arthur Baker and John Robie pushed an Roland 808 drum machine to new heights.

There is no perfect beat; there’s lots of great beats. But it was a good title.

Watch in the player above as Baker and Robie dissect the elements of the track and explore playing the mixing board like an instrument to create new levels of sound.

If the doc leaves you thirsty for more 808 kicks and hits, head over to the 808 Cube website launched yesterday as a collaboration between Google and Roland.
