The controversy surrounding Macklemore’s anti-semitic get up has gotten so out of hand Young Space Needle had no choice to but to apologize. Well, we’re not sure this counts as an apology, but it’s the best thing we’re going to get from the Grammy-winning rapper.
On his website, Macklemore writes:
My intention was to dress up and surprise the people at the show with a random costume and nothing more. Thus, it was surprising and disappointing that the images of a disguise were sensationalized leading to the immediate assertion that my costume was anti-Semitic. I acknowledge how the costume could, within a context of stereotyping, be ascribed to a Jewish caricature. I am here to say that it was absolutely not my intention, and unfortunately at the time I did not foresee the costume to be viewed in such regard.
So Macklemore kind-of-sort-of gets hows you could misconstrue his large nose, black beard, and questionable hand gestures as a jewish caricature, but only if you were already talking about stereotyping. Like, within the context of stereotyping, he gets it– kind of.
If you want to read the whole apology go to Macklemore’s website. It will further explain that he’s not a bad person and never has any negative intentions.
