Cudi prepped us that he’d be back on his rap shit (and apparently he’s back on the trees as well). He returns confidently into the rap realm with “Just What I Am,” following up his feature verse on Hit Boy’s “Old School Caddy”. Like his G.O.O.D. Music label mate, Cudder has taken the production reigns and crafted a beat reminiscent of his early work á la Man On The Moon: The End Of Day. Despite shifting between and blending genres Cudi’s music remains personal, opening the track by saying, “I’m just what you made God, not many I trust / I’ma go my own way God, take my faith to wherever you want.” Cudi has rekindled his passion to rap like any dedicated stoner whose eternal flame stays lit. He also brought along his long-time friend from Cleveland, King Chip (formerly Chip Tha Ripper).
As he hits us with monstrous Peter Frampton-esq drops chanting that he needs to smoke, partnering with old homies, kicking verses with his unique flow and keeping his music innately intimate to his life, Cudi has shown us that perhaps he’s never left. Check out “Just What I Am” off his upcoming album, Indicud.
