Despite the fact that both graffiti and tattoo culture have penetrated the general mainstream, true purveyors of each art should realize that their beginnings are rooted in the illicit–graffiti, for its defacement (or improvement, depending on which side you’re on) of public/private property and tattoos, for their taboo (or self-expressive) marking on the human body.
No one knows the story of these two sides of the fences more intimately than infamous New York City writer and tattoo artist KAVES who’s new book Skin Graf: Masters of Graffiti Tattoo offers an in-depth look at how the two worlds have historically merged. Readers and fans alike can join him, tattoo documentarian (and book contributor) Billy Burke and Mass Appeal’s own, Sacha Jenkins, at The New York Public Library this evening for a special conversation about the book Skin Graf and its subject matter.
