Enigmatic as it is iconic, the cover of Joy Division’s 1979 album Unknown Pleasures has ended up on everything from tees to sneakers to tattoos on peoples’ backs. In this video from the upcoming Visualized conference in New York City Peter Saville, the Factory Records graphic designer who helped create the cover, explains what the image is and how it came to be. Who would’ve thought that rebellious Manchester youth like Ian Curtis were reading the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy?
