Joaquin Phoenix has had discussions about playing the lead role in Marvel’s upcoming Doctor Strange movies. Though no deal has officially been reached, there are rumors that casting info about Doctor Strange may be the studio’s big reveal at Comic-Con.
Previously rumored for the Lex Luthor role in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which went to Jesse Eisenberg, Phoenix is notoriously selective about the roles he takes on. However, his interest in playing Luthor may mean he would consider taking on a comic-book franchise. The role has previously been linked to Benedict Cumberbath and Tom Hardy, and the movie will be directed by Scott Derrickson.
Marvel has already teased Doctor Strange in several movies, including Thor and Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
The comic-book is centered around a former neurosurgeon who serves as the “Sorcerer Supreme,” or protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Doctor Strange made his first appearance in the comic-book series “Strange Tales,” and went on to have his own series as well as cameos in “The Fantastic Four,” “Spider-Man,” and “Nick Fury.”
