It’s been over five years since Jesse Boykins III released his last full-length solo album, The Beauty Created, but that’s not to say he hasn’t been busy. After touring throughout Europe over the past few years and collaborating with wide variety of artists, ranging from Vic Mensa to Melo-X, Boykins returns with his third album, Love Apparatus. Those not familiar with Boykins’ sound might mistake him for James Fauntleroy, or even be tempted to draw a comparison to Theophilus London.
The sound is definitely familiar, in fact the London’s go-to producer Machinedrum does the majority of the production on Boykins’ new album. However, where Boykins separates himself from his peers is in his ability to incorporate elements of jazz, R&B, funk, electronica, and soul into his music without visible lines. These various influences merge into an ethereal mix that seems only appropriate for Boykins’ weightless voice and Machinedrum’s heart-pounding production.
