Maryland emcee Jay IDK brings a fresh approach to the ubiquitous new era of trap music by delivering precise lyricism with compelling storytelling. SubTRAP, the title of his debut album, stands for ‘Suburban Trap,’ or in his words, “Trap music with substance.” Don’t get it twisted though, Jay’s music isn’t preachy, by any stretch of the imagination. If anything, it’s refreshingly honest. Rather than appropriating the role of a kingpin, he portrays characters in the dope game based on his own experiences, from the college stoner to the plug.
While you may be tempted to compare him to pre-Section.80 Kendrick Lamar, understand that Jay IDK’s brand of hip hop is very much his own. And if SubTRAP is any indication of what’s to come, you can expect him to make major waves in the next year.
