After only two months in production, the first hip hop musical, “Holler If Ya Hear Me” starring poet Saul Williams, will be shutting down. The show’s producer Eric L. Gold claims the “financial burdens of Broadway” is what eventually led to the decision to call it quits.
The show’s finances were an issue from the jump: Last week, it only drew in $155,000 dollars, which is nothing compared to the $917,000 a sellout would have brought in. Due to the low sales, tickets for the show were heavily discounted; “Holler If Ya Hear Me” became the cheapest ticket on Broadway with an average price of $38.44.
The last showing of “Holler If Ya Hear Me” is July 20. Act quickly if you want to see the only hip hop musical that’s ever been on Broadway.
