Hey, You’re Cool! Luka Sabbat

Hey, You’re Cool! Luka Sabbat

At the tender age of 17, Luka Sabbat has managed to make his way into magazine spreads and ad campaigns for some of the hottest brands in street fashion at the moment. His resumé includes shoots with Hood By Air, Stussy, ALIFE, Been Trill, VFILES and ASSK, to name a few. Born in New York City and bred in the streets of Paris, Sabbat was raised by parents who have deep ties to the fashion industry. Following in the footsteps of his father, Luka hopes to step away from the limelight of modeling and into a more behind the scenes role in the world of design. With personality to match his big hair, we caught up with the self-proclaimed “King of SoHo” amidst the madness of New York Fashion Week.

Mass Appeal: What were you like as a child?

Luka Sabbat: When I was 3, my mom used to take me to fashion shows like Galliano, Christian Dior and all that. I used to hate it, I would cry and complain because the music was too loud. A lot of times my dad would have to leave the fashion shows because of that. Models used to babysit me backstage, they loved me.

MA: At what age did you start dressing yourself?

LS: The age I started dressing myself well was about a year ago. I’m not gonna lie I used to be a hypebeast; Supreme, BBC/Ice Cream, The Hundreds and all that. But then I realized it’s not about the logos and what everyone likes, it’s more about style. A few months ago I really reshaped my sense of style.

MA: Being in high school, what’s it like balancing your school life and your life outside of school?

LS: Man it’s so hard, I get opportunities to fly to Japan, and do so many things but I’m stuck in school. My school runs from 9-3 and I get invited to fashion shows at 2 o’ clock on some days. I still have a lot to learn but I look at all these kids with nothing else going on in their lives. It’s 3 p.m. and they just go home, that’s all they do so I’m thankful.

MA: What’s the strangest comment you’ve received about your hair?

LS: Someone once told me that I look like Sideshow Bob from “The Simpsons.”

MA: If the world was gonna end tomorrow what’s the first thing you would do?

LS: Buy a brand new outfit to die in. I would cop a Rick Owens Crocodile jacket, Undercoverism t-shirt, Margiela pants painted white and a pair of Vans.

MA: Dream girl?

LS: Probably Lindsay Lohan, she’s my biggest crush ever because she’s cute white trash. I love white trash girls like Amanda Bynes and Miley Cyrus but those would be side chicks. If I actually wanted a girlfriend it would be Erykah Badu.

MA: What’s the one item of clothing near and dear to your heart that you can’t part with?

LS: It’s gotta be my pair of beat up Balenciaga sneakers that my mom sent me from the Balenciaga showroom. I’ve done almost every photo shoot with those, they’ve been through hell and back. I had to give them a break for a little bit because I was wearing them so much.

MA: How are you going to avoid some of the child star pitfalls that are plaguing Justin Bieber?

LS: First off, shout out to Justin Bieber for keeping it real. I fuck with him, but I don’t wanna end up like him. I wouldn’t wear purple, definitely wouldn’t have his haircut. I’d just be more low key with my shit. If I ever do anything stupid I don’t want any cameras around.
