This year’s 2014 BET Awards was nearly four hour marathon ceremony, which encompassed almost everything you could want from an award show. Chris Rock hosted this year’s festivities, which featured the the usual crowd of singers, actors, actresses, and athletes. The musical performance lineup was packed with talent, including live performances from Pharrell, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, T.I., Lionel Richie, a prerecorded performance from Jay Z and Beyoncé, and many more. Highlights included a surprise performance from Missy Elliot, Chris Rock’s on-point commentary, and the lifetime achievement award awarded to R&B singer Lionel Richie (whose name BET spelled incorrectly).
Nicki Minaj won the Best Female Artist award for the fifth year in a row, coming out ahead against Iggy Azalea, Eve, Angel Haze, and Charli Baltimore. (Seems like BET was just looking for filler to round out the category, because let’s be honest who’s REALLY checking for some of those females.) During Minaj’s acceptance speech she took some shots at Iggy Azaelea about writing her own rhymes, and also talked about how a fear of paparazzi made her endure a near death experience by herself, ultimately making her “realize I don’t care what anybody got to say… I’m going to do me” statement.
