Billy Schon is known for his ability to capture the behind-the-scenes moments in graffiti and street culture through his photography. The artist traverses (some would even say trespasses) barren terrains, empty train yards, abandoned buildings, and more, all in the spirit of documenting the culture. From 2012 to 2014, Schon took his shots over to the Fresh Paint NYC Instagram account, providing a feed chock full of graffiti gold.
Taking a fly-on-the-wall approach, Schon’s photographs show a cast of characters that range from graffiti writers who have maintained anonymity to others who’ve become notable graphic and fine artists, showing the many trajectories that stem from acrylic on brick.
The Instagram Archives are comprised of 96 personally selected photos, chosen from a pool of thousands, which were all shot on an iPhone strictly for Instagram. It is important to note that this is not a zine, nor is it a “coffee-table book.” This is an actual photo album—like the ones mom dukes used to break out for ya main jammie—containing actual prints of the aforementioned selects.
The Instagram Archives is available now via Fresh Paint NYC‘s webstore. Hit the video player up top to check out a trailer of the photo album.
