After defeating Adrien Broner last December, Marcos Maidana solidified himself as an emerging people’s champion. He aimed to cement that status last night when he faced Floyd Mayweather, with an opportunity to hand Mayweather the first loss of his career. While Mayweather found himself in some tough spots over the course of the fight, he ultimately prevailed.
Barely escaping with a majority decision, Mayweather was hit more times during this fight than any of his 38 other fights tracked by CompuBox. No one believed that Maidana, a 12-to-1 underdog, could have put up such a hard battle. Most expected the fight to be over quickly, as is the case for most Mayweather matches. One media outlet even reported a poll which was 46-0 in Mayweather’s favor, but Maidana held his own through the majority of the fight.
However, stats don’t lie. Mayweather threw threw half as many punches as Maidana did, and still connected on more. Mayweather landed 230 of 426 blows (54%) while Maidana landed 221 of 858 (26%). The boxers gave fans a thrilling fight worth talking about, and there’s already rumors of a Fall rematch.
