This piece is a bit different from the majority of content we host, but I’ll be damned if I don’t share this. Although I’m an avid fan of advertisement, I missed this video over the past couple days. It wasn’t until my homegirl from high school posted this on Facebook and I saw the comments, that I gave it a look.
Clearly aimed at a female demographic, this spot by Dove speaks to the way women view themselves. Filming a social experiment where women describe themselves and have their sketches drawn by a former forensic sketch artist. Afterwards the artist sketched the same women based upon a description by a person each woman had met recently. I don’t want to ruin the video for you, but the results are interesting to say the least.
For some this advertisement may touch a soft spot considering the revolving discussions surrounding the way women are portrayed, how they view themselves and the significance our culture places on looks, to name a few. Treading on a thin line between encouraging women to appreciate their looks more and putting too much emphasis on outward appearance, Dove wraps this experiment up with a simple tagline: You are more beautiful than you think.
