Designer Brian Wood Turns West For L.A. Alumni Series
Major players from basketball to Hollywood have balled so hard for decades, it's hard to remember when they were in their prime. Peep how designer Brian Wood commemorates celebs like Magic Johnson, Jack Nicholson and Eazy-E in his new apparel collection titled, "Vintage Mash-Ups."
New York based “Panty Raider” and sportswear designer Brian Wood created a classic when he launched his Brooklyn Alumni collection in 2006 for the Wood Valley High Collection for spring 2007. Featuring the faces of some of the borough’s iconic legends and natives, Wood’s shirts planted Notorious B.I.G, Larry David, Lil Kim and Michael Jordan (to name four) squarely on the chests of their admirers.
Perhaps feeling left out, or just wanting to have their own steez, LA outfit COLORS partnered with the Pratt Institute graduate to release the LA Alumni, a capsule collection which borrows themes from the original and will make its debut on May 19 at COLORS’ LA boutique. See the flyer for the launch below.
Wood enlisted the help of Dan Regan, owner of Los Angeles based Black Banditz tattoo parlor, in selecting the faces for the LA ALUMNI collection; to achieve a balance of commercial and underground personalities which include Jack Nicholson, Magic Johnson, Ice Cube, and Leonado Dicaprio.
Black Banditz will be on site providing a pop up tattoo parlor, and LA artist/tastemaker THURZ will be hosting the event. The LA ALUMNI is exclusively carried at COLORS and is inspired by sports team color-ways. It’s available on T-shirts, V-necks, tank tops, crew-neck sweatshirts and zip front hoodies. Additionally, Wood created nine “Vintage Mash-ups” designs made from 1980s and ’90s vintage LA and NYC sports teams, T-shirts that are blended with cut-up, pop culture graphics. The “Vintage Mash-Ups” have hand bleached, hand painted and hand pinned, details to ensure that each design is one-of-a-kind.
