It’s Time to Let the “Skrillex in Hip Hop” Thing Happen
Give beats a chance.
Yeah, that “Wild for the Night” track may not have been your cup of molly water, but it’s starting to look more and more like rappers are going to continue to collaborate with Skrillex. Go ahead and be averse, deny EDM’s omnipresence and its infiltration of hip hop. Lord knows I’ve tried. But with the release of this Skrillex and Chance the Rapper song, “Coast is Clear,” there may be no point. The beat is way less overstated than “Wild for the Night,” and Chance coasts over it in his eccentric, dexterous way. He’s really suited perfectly for the collab, a modern day, genre-bending artist with a penchant for good vibes and weird alleys. The track’s got this bouncy feel that assaults all resistance you’ve built toward the Skrillex/EDM movement. “Dance like it hurts to stand still,” Chance says. Fine, we’ll oblige.
