New York City chef Eddie Huang is known to cook up a mean dish or two. His critically acclaimed Downtown BaoHaus restaurant is host to renowned Taiwanese comfort cuisine, and his “Fresh Off The Boat” series with Vice is stuff of legend. It ain’t a secret, Huang is fresher than your average chef. He stays dipped in fly garments like Coogi sweaters and even rocks his very own designs, the latest being the Nike SB x BaoHaus Dunk High “Chairman Bao.”
Although this doesn’t mark the first time that Huang has collaborated on a sneaker, he worked on FILA “Cage” model earlier this year, it is certainly his first Nike SB. The SB division has clearly made an effort over the years to avoid being boxed in as strictly a skate brand. Athletes, designers, musicians, and even rappers have tried their hand at designing a signature Dunk. However, this is the first time that an actual chef has blessed the iconic silhouette.
Eddie Huang is extending boundaries and provoking a conversation amongst footwear enthusiasts. Just exactly who is qualified to design athletic footwear? Clearly a sense of style is necessary, which Huang gets the pass on. But the release of a collaborative dunk opens new doors. Soon we will see popular personalities from all walks of life providing their iterations on the sneaker game, and are we mad about that? Not really, because if the shoe fits….
Which brings us to the sneaker itself. Modeled after BaoHaus’ signature dish, the Chairman Bao, the Dunk High is outfitted in a beige unfinished suede upper, with a mesh white tongue and laces. The predominantly neutral upper sits atop an ice blue sole meant to replicate the restaurant’s neon sign found outside, a touch that makes the kicks pop.
Huang cooked up some marvelous Dunks to get sneakerheads mouths watering as opposed to the usual foodies checking for the baos he serves up. The Nike SB x BaoHaus Dunk High “Chairman Bao” is slated to release at select SB retailers beginning April 1st.
